DEUS EX MACHINA: “I Am Your Father”

Place of events is a small American city in the 60s. The film is telling about our general, common fear of the unknown, different or unfamiliar, and desire to find and connect with somebody like-minded ‘out there’. Something or someone to care about.

However, miscommunication and prejudice often prevail.
This is illustrated in the character of a social misfit called Darth Vader.

Vader carries a burden of guilt. He feels he has failed his wife (who passed away) and his two kids. He finds a potential date through an app/Tinder, and is about to meet her in person for the first time, at a peculiar (retro) diner.

Before he does, he seeks some distraction.
He visits a kids playground, and approaches a random kid, just to check on his (bad) social skills,
and see how people react to him and his (unusual) appearance and behavior.

Little girl (called Daisy) is a bit confused by the weird manner he approaches her.
During the conversation, Vader has a brief flashback. Through haze, he remembers Padme, Leia and Luke, and gets a bit emotional, mad at himself.

He raises his voice and presents himself as a villain, which additionally scares a little girl away.

Vader realizes that he mostly intimidates people,
even when he means no harm at all.

In the next scene, Vader is waiting for Joanne, his Tinder acquaintance.
He is befriended by Norma, inspired by the character of the same name from David Lynch’s Twin Peaks TV series.

Joanne comes, and rejects Vader as well.
She enjoys his undivided attention, but realizes he is probably not a good match for her,
coz apart from the fact that he is old, and doesn’t look like ‘the kind of guy she is supposed to bring home’, Vader is actually not even interested in a romantic relationship with her.

All that Vader wants is to find an ‘apprentice’ to ‘rule the galaxy with’.
Metaphorically, someone who could understand his inner world (or ’galaxy’).
and who would accept him the way he is.

Basically, just someone to talk to and make him feel less lonely.
